City-parish officials this morning dedicated the recently completed improvements to the intersection of Government Street and Foster Drive. The $2.8 million project, part of the city's Green Light Program, added left-turn lanes in all directions, computer-controlled traffic signals and push-button pedestrian crosswalks.

The Metairie firm Hard Rock Construction finished the project in 70 days -- 80 days ahead of schedule, Department of Public Works Director Pete Newkirk said at the dedication ceremony. It's the seventh Green Light project to be completed.

Mayor Kip Holden called it "one off the most important and historic intersections in the Baton Rouge area."

The improvements "will help break the gridlock, keep traffic moving and provide much-needed relief to commuters and residents in this area," Holden said. "It will also benefit the businesses in the area by opening up new turning lanes, providing better access to local shops and allowing more cars to quickly and safely through the intersection each day."

The short ceremony at the Foster Drive YMCA included public works employees holding a banner touting the project's completion across Foster Drive using two bucket trucks.

perseids.jpg
Every August, the Perseid Meteor Shower lights up the sky as the earth passes through the leftover debris of a comet orbiting around the sun. The result is a spectacular display of some 100 or more meteors, or shooting stars, per hour! In this live planetarium presentation, Jon Elvert, director of the Pennington Planetarium, explores why the Perseid Meteor Shower is the year's major meteor shower, what comets are and where they come from, and the difference between meteorites and asteroids. A tour of the summer's night sky, identifying constellations and visible planets, is also included. Admission: Regular planetarium admission.

Chris_Dennis.The_Second_verse.jpgBaton Rouge Gallery will hold a First Wednesday Opening Reception tonight for three artists to kick off a month-long exhibition.

The work of Jenny Authement, Chris Dennis and Michael W. Howes will be on display through August 27. The opening reception is 7-9 p.m. tonight. The exhibits features "a menagerie of fish, birds and birdlike forms, along with installations reflecting the basic elements," according to John Byrd, the gallery's special events coordinator.

The Second Verse is the Same as the First, Dennis' exhibition at the gallery, features paintings that are deliberately ambiguous. As Byrd puts it: "the fish in these works are often surrounded by water but they are quite clearly 'out of it.' The birds depicted in others are wingless, earth-bound, stuck. The strangeness yet immediacy of the imagery draw on the viewer's preconceptions and invite them to create their own narrative."

Sculptors Authement and Howes, who have collaborated in the past under the name MJ Bronz, each have their own exhibits at the gallery. Howes's exhibit, IRDS @ CERTAIN SITES, feature sculptures that are part of a continuing series of works based on the bird-like forms called "Irds" as well as collage drawings. Authement's exhibition, Mystic Triforms, "references the artist's connections to the basic elements of air, earth and fire," Byrd said.
