lions.jpg If a psychedelic trip back to 1970s hard rock sounds like fun, then you'll definitely want to be at the Spanish Moon this weekend. The Austin-based band Lions is bringing their retro riffage to Baton Rouge.

Since the band formed in 2005, they've put out an EP in addition to their full length album, No Generation. You may have also heard (or even played) their song, "Metal Heavy Lady" on Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.

Their furious guitar play, backed by pounding drums, creates a combination of Black Sabbath and early '90s Soundgarden. Those familiar with the Aussie trio Wolfmother will dig the screeching sounds of Lions.

Baton Rouge Gallery's Movie and Music series continues Saturday with the showing of the 1924 original live action (and silent) version of Peter Pan. Local band The (New) Zeelanders will perform the score live.

The movie starts at 8 p.m. or sunset, whichever comes last. Admission is free for gallery members and $5 for everyone else. Free popcorn will be provided.

Thumbnail image for Card_Front_copy.jpg

Here's how the gallery describes the film:

This nearly forgotten 1924 original live action version of the classic story will charm audiences with its storybook magic centering around Peter Pan and his befriending of the Darling children: Wendy, Michael and John. Their magical adventure into the island of Never Land features lavish special effects, pirates, a crocodile, Indians and flying children. Also, the film's innovative use of special effects is delightfully evidenced in the fairy Tinkerbell, played by Virginia Brown Faire. This adaptation runs from merry ole England and the Darling's nursery to the Lost Boys' forest. This film is an adaptation of the play by J.M. Barrie and was directed by Herbert Brenon.

Baton Rouge hosted the annual BabelCon sci-fi convention last weekend, and photographer Adam Vaccarella was there to capture the some of the three-day event. The festival offered included a wide range of entertainment, games and speakers in the science-fiction, anime and gaming industries. This year's special guest was Rekha Sharma, who played the Cylon "Tory" in the Battlestar Galactica TV series on the Sci-Fi channel. And The Consortium of Genius rock band played a Saturday night show.

Cuisine Rouge is proud to be a new affiliate of Red Stick Live. For our first contribution to this site, we wanted to share our Top 25 Dishes in Baton Rouge. See what you think, you might just find your new favorite dish in Baton Rouge too!

cropped-cr21.jpgWe're joining forces with the local food blog Cuisine Rouge, already the most prolific food site in the city. Their mission is to seek out and review the best meals in Baton Rouge, including some great food at places that often get overlooked. These guys are serious foodies, which means they won't be reviewing your neighborhood chain restaurant. But if you want to know where to get great Pho, the best seafood the city has to offer or just some of the best deals in town, this is the site for you. So check it out.

Photographer Adam Vaccarella had a front-row view for the packed Dirty Projectors show Thursday at Chelsea's Cafe.

Update: We also have photos of Lafayette band Givers, who opened for Dirty Projectors.

Plenty to do below the fold ...
Baton Rouge's annual three-day sci-fi extravaganza, BabelCon, kicks off today at the Cook Hotel near the LSU campus. The festival offers a wide range of entertainment, games and speakers in the science-fiction, anime and gaming industries.

This year's special guest is Rekha Sharma, who played the Cylon "Tory" in the Battlestar Galactica TV series on the Sci-Fi channel. And The Consortium of Genius rock band  -- once described as "a collision between Weird Al Yankovic and Spinal Tap"  -- plays a public concert Saturday night.

"They do some really strange rock music; it's all geek-related," said Sydney LeJeune, a BabelCon organizer.
rachnid_glossy.jpg
But the festival, which is a presentation of the Science and Engineering Education Foundation, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to using Science Fiction media to create interest in Science, also has a serious side. A number of scientists, including speakers from NASA, Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, Brec Highland Road Observatory, the Baton Rouge Astronomical Society, LSU, UNO and Xavier University, are scheduled to speak.

Admission for the concert only is $5. The festival badges are $45 for all three days, $30 for Friday and Saturday, and $20 for Sunday only. Badges include free admission to the concert.

More information and a full schedule is available here. The festival's commercial is below:

projector.jpgSince 2002, Dave Longstreth has led a shifting accompaniment of musicians in a very unique and experimental indie rock group he calls Dirty Projectors. Thanks to Bullhorn Bandits and Chelsea's Café, the show comes to Baton Rouge this week. The current band lineup consists of only six members, but Longstreth has recorded and toured with more than 15 different artists and musicians since the project began. One notable former member is Ezra Koenig, who toured Europe with Dirty Projectors before forming his own indie pop band, Vampire Weekend. Dirty Projectors are also known for their great collaborations with artists such as Bjork and David Byrne. The band teamed with the former Talking Heads front man on the great track "Knotty Pine."

Dirty Projectors have always had a heavy vocal presence in their tracks. "It's crazy what you can do with a human voice, or a couple human voices," says Longstreth in a recent interview with Pitchfork Media, "It's so basic and it's so direct."

The band's latest album, Bitte Orca, actually features three singers, all of which are female. The record released to great reviews, including a 9.2/10 from Pitchfork and an 8/10 from British source, NME. The album carries more accessible and traditional song structure while sticking to some of the experimental, aesthetic roots of early Dirty Projectors works. And the outcome is brilliant.

Opening for Dirty Projectors are a local band from Lafayette called GIVERS. Their cheery, dance-inspiring tracks "Ceiling of Plankton" and "Saw You First" are featured on the band's MySpace and are similar in feel to indie pop band Of Montreal. GIVERS will set the stage with a fun, high-energy show that should get the crowd excited about a new, great local act. I hope to be able to visit with the band just before they go on tomorrow night and post the interview in its entirety this weekend along with pictures from the show.

Forum 35 has responded to the uproar over its removal of a nude photograph on display at the Art Melt this past weekend. The non-apology, available here on the Forum 35 website, is stuck in the middle of press release touting the success of the event. It mentions nothing of the monumentally poor decision to have police escort the photographer, Kenneth Wilks, from the Shaw Center after he protested the decision.

Here's the key part of the statement by Forum 35 President Erin Monroe Wesley:

Forum 35 regrets the decision to temporarily remove the piece without in depth consideration of its impact on the artistic integrity of the piece, the artist, and the arts community and its supporters. Forum 35 and The Art Melt Committee will work to ensure this mistake is not made in the future.
In protest, a local supporter of the arts and free expression has designed the t-shirt below. You can get your own here. Here's the statement from the designer, who shall remain anonymous but who is a friend of mine and not affiliated with the photographer. Here's his statement:

In protest of this egregious act of censorship, the proceeds from the sale of the products with this image will benefit the First Amendment Project (www.thefirstamendment.org) located in Oakland, California.

Get You Sum

dim-sum.jpgDim Sum Seafood Restaurant
9431 Delcourt Ave
Baton Rouge, LA 70815-4127
(225) 924-3550

You've seen them ... ubiquitous, it seems, on nearly every street corner in south Baton Rouge: the strip mall Chinese restaurant. Sadly, this is what has come to define the cuisine of China to many -- the picture menus, the ordering by combo number, the same ingredients, precooked, trucked in from the port of Houston from some faceless, soulless warehouse in some godforsaken place like Bay City or Pasadena.

This obscenity ignores the thousands of years of the culinary culture of China -- the regional dishes, the small courses of bliss, the traditional delicacies.

I have heard rumblings that at least one place in the metro Baton Rouge still delivers these goods, and so, tucked away a block off Airline Highway in a nondescript building, I found Dim Sum. Dim Sum means "a bit of heart" in Chinese, and that proved to be an apt description of what I found here ... authentic food, prepared without pretense, simple and satisfying.

I arrive a little late for lunch this day and am concerned to find few cars in the parking lot. Save one table, I appear to have the spacious dining room to myself. Upon entering, I am presented with two menus -- one a list of dim sum courses complete with an accompanying flip book of pictures for hapless gaijin myself, and the other a menu of the McChinese offerings we've all come to know. Since I've eaten enough sweet-and-sour pork and sesame chicken to last me a lifetime, I boldly go the Dim Sum route. Dim Sum refers to a series of small courses served with tea -- in this case ranging from around $3-$5 a piece, with four or so making a tidy lunch.

Perhaps sensing my uncertainty, I am guided by a most helpful employee by the name of Amy who, for the next hour, serves as my culinary tour guide. She also explains why I have the place to myself today: their big crowds come on the weekends, when large Asian families show up for a taste of the traditional, traveling from neighboring states in some cases to get a bite of some things you just can't get in most Chinese restaurants around here. Under Amy's steady hand, I make my choices: Cha Siu Bao ($2.50 for 3) a sort of bready dumpling filled with minced Chinese barbecued pork; the Siu Mai ($2.90 for 4) rice flour dumplings stuffed with pork; and the Ha Gow ($3.25 for 4) pleated, translucent shrimp dumplings that seem born to be married with the soy sauce and homemade chili oil that stand on every table.

Since Dim Sum is made to be served with tea, I opt for a hot pot of Oolong, one of the many varieties Dim Sum offers.

The Cha Siu Bao look like they might be heavy or floury, but what I find is a light texture, slightly sweet, and filled with delicious minced pork bits in a Chinese barbecue sauce. On to the Siu Mai, these are moist, flavorful bits of pork stuffing in dumplings that took particularly well to the aforementioned chili oil. The Ha Gow are fantastic -- snappy shrimp inside a translucent dumpling that releases juicy, delicious broth with every bite.

On the spot I resolve to return, as I have only scratched the surface. If you consider these as appetizers, there are also main courses, including stir fries of rice noodles, vegetable stir fries, wontons, and an array of chef's specials ranging from the traditional clay pot dishes (which are sure to be my next meal here), to daily specials, fresh curries and even steamed whole fish.

If you are looking to break out of combo meal Chinese, make the trip to Dim Sum and experiment a little -- you'll get a little taste of Hong Kong one small plate at a time.

Lymbyc_Systym_5.jpg

Brothers Michael and Jared Bell started playing music together when they just had toy guitars and drums. The brothers each went on to play with various different bands in their hometown of Tempe, Arizona before combining to form Lymbyc Systym in 2001. The duo combine acoustic instruments with an abundance of electronic elements to construct their ambient, dreamy tracks that are reminiscent of the Icelandic post-rock band, Sigur Ros. The band has also drawn comparisons to Austin post-rock instrumentalists, Explosions in the Sky, because of their sometimes elaborately embellished yet entrancing passages. The group's newest album, Shutter Release, is due out this November, and these laptop post-rock programmers are definitely worth a look and a listen for those interested.

Every year the U.S. Census Bureau releases two population estimates: one for cities and another for counties. The past two years those estimates, including the 2008 numbers released about a week back, have shown that both Baton Rouge and East Baton Rouge Parish are losing population by a few thousand people a year, an assertion that usually drives Mayor Kip Holden and the other people running the city-parish government crazy.

The city's official reaction has been to criticize the Census estimates as inaccurate. Their argument is that if commercial development and sales tax revenues are still increasing, the population must also be growing. Now, I don't really blame the city for making this argument since it has a financial incentive to do so (growing areas usually attract more private and government money), but the reasoning has always struck me as pretty unpersuasive. I mean, if the city has hard proof, let's see it. Increasing sales tax revenue could be caused by a lot of factors. That's not hard proof.

To see what's actually going on, it helps to take a few steps back and look at the larger picture. The graph below helps put the numbers in context. It shows the Census Bureau's population estimates for Baton Rouge, New Orleans and East Baton Rouge Parish from 2000 to 2008.

graph(8).jpgAs you can see, Baton Rouge experienced a bump in population the year after Hurricane Katrina (the parish as a whole grew even more that year) and then saw a slight drop in the two following years. But a key fact to consider, and one that the city officials often overlook, is that Baton Rouge's population is still quite a bit larger than the pre-Katrina population. When the population dips below the pre-Katrina level, then everybody should start panicking.

As a live music obsessive, I often do somewhat unnecessary voodoo.jpgresearch to find out information that will eventually be presented to me in an organized, accessible and timely enough fashion. The following is an unfinished product of some of my work. Using various sources, I have put together a very early and nowhere near complete schedule for Voodoo Fest 2009.

As you may know, Voodoo Fest announced their initial lineup last week. The daily schedule however is usually not released until a month or two before the actual festival; all we have now is a list of names. Below is a day-by-day schedule of what I have found that we actually do know right now. First though, is an initial lineup divided by the distinct stage areas Voodoo has (Le Ritual, Le Flambeau and Le Carnival). Hopefully this can begin to help you decide which day or days you will be planning on attending The Voodoo Experience. At the very least, it should be an interesting and exciting Voodoo announcement that I will periodically update and post as I gather new information. Enjoy!

Le Ritual
Kiss, Eminem, Jane's Addiction, Widespread Panic, Lenny Kravitz, Flaming Lips, Justice, Ween, Silversun Pickups, Gogol Bordello, Wolfmother, The Black Keys, The Pogues, Brand New, The Cool Kids, Black Lips, Janelle Monae, The Knux, Q-Tip, Mutemath, All Time Low, Mates of State, American Bang, Earl Greyhound, My Name Is John Michael, The Vettes, Glasgow, The Generationals, Lucy's Walk, From Legends to Nancy

Le Flambeau
George Clinton and P Funk All Stars, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Trombone Shorty, Drive By Truckers, Rebirth Brass Band, Big Sam's Funky Nation, Cyril Neville's Blues Revue, Preservation Hall with Special Guest, Alejandro Escovedo, Walter Wolfman Washington and the Road Masters with the DBB Horns, JJ Grey and Mofro, Little Freddie King, John Mooney Bluesiana, Little Brian Zydeco Travelers, Papa Grows Funk, Eric Church, DJ Soul Sister, Ledisi, Dan Dyer, Shooter Jennings, Benjy Davis Project, Amanda Shaw and the Cute Guys, Beausoleil, Andrew Duhon and the Lonesome Crows, Sarah Qunita, Loose Marbles, Leo Jackson and the Melody Clouds of Joy, Leroy Jones, Mas Mamones, Eric Baker, TBC Brass Band, New Orleans Klezmer All Stars

Le Carnival
Fischerspooner, Meat Puppets, The New Orleans Bingo! Show, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Rotary Downs, Fleur de Tease, Quintron and Miss Pussycat, Happy Talk Band, Zydepunks, Suplecs, Why Are We Building Such a Big Ship?, White Bitch, MC Trachiotomy, Ratty Scurvics, Down, Katey Red, Big Fredia, Sissy Nobby, Bones, Luke Winslow King, Brother Taisuke Mass Choir, Davis Rogan, The R. Scully Rough 7

***IMPORTANT NOTE: This information is not speculation. There are sources for everything listed. That being said, all information is subject to change. Friday dates are the most tentative as bands will occasionally list the first day of a festival as a placeholder and may actually end up playing on a different day.

From Essence to Voodoo

This weekend, the Big Easy hosts the Essence Music Festival (the largest event celebrating African American culture in the United States). The festival has been in New Orleans every year since 1995, with the exception of 2006 due to Hurricane Katrina. Some of the bigger names at the festival this year are Beyonce, John Legend, Lionel Richie, Ne-yo, Al Green and Salt-N-Pepa.

About four months from now, the Voodoo Experience (commonly known as Voodoo Fest) will kick off in New Orleans City Park. Voodoo Fest has been held in the Crescent City in late October since 1999. This year, the festival will return to Halloween weekend. The initial lineup was released last week and the headliners are Kiss, Eminem, Jane's Addiction, Widespread Panic, The Flaming Lips, and Justice.

Everyone always knows, or has at least heard of, most of the headliners at a major music festival. I figured I would take the time to look over each festival's lineup and pull out three of the lesser known names to have a look at. And since Voodoo Fest has been on my mind lately with the lineup being announced, I decided to choose artists that will be appearing at both festivals.

The first name I came across that I had to include was Janelle Monae. Originally from Kansas City but based in Atlanta by way of New York, Monae has recently burst on the scene. She has opened for indie pop band, Of Montreal, and also supported No Doubt on their summer tour this year. She has a powerful voice and a fun sound I'm going to dub "soultronica." Her song, Many Moons, was nominated for a Grammy this year.

Next up, is an alternative hip hop group consisting of brothers Kentrell "Krispy Kream" Lindsey and Alvin "Rah Almillio" Lindsey. The New Orleans duo call themselves The Knux, which is short for knuckleheads. The Lindsey brothers were displaced by Hurricane Katrina and moved to L.A. The Knux have had songs featured on TV shows and movies and have appeared live with Common, Q-Tip, Nas, and The Roots. Rolling Stone magazine said they sound like "Led Zeppelin and the Cash Money Crew" while Alvin Lindsey himself compares the group to the Strokes saying, "We want to be extra-grimy, extra raw."

Finally, I have to mention another group local to New Orleans. He plays in the city quite frequently, and if you haven't seen him, you need to. Trombone "Troy Andrews" Shorty and his band Orleans Avenue play jazzy, funky, fun sets with everything from rock to hip hop. When Andrews was 19, he was in Lenny Kravitz's horn section on a 2005 world tour. The following year, he played with U2 in the re-opening of the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina. Troy Andrews is among the most entertaining trombonists and trumpeters around.

If you happen to be going to the Essence Music Festival, do not miss these acts. If you don't currently have plans to go to Essence Fest this weekend, you can still catch these three up and coming artists at Voodoo Fest in the fall. If you're considering or already planning on going to Voodoo Fest, check back with Red Stick Live early next week because I'll have a special information posting about the festival.
